Why plant based?
At Nourish, we promote a whole food plant based diet because the research is clear. A whole food plant based diet is the only diet that’s been shown to not only prevent, but to actually reverse, advanced cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, and is associated with a lowered risk for many forms of cancer.
Considering that chronic, long-term illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer account for more than 70 percent of deaths worldwide, this knowledge is very significant. We simply don’t have to suffer illness at the rates that we do.
In addition, maintaining a healthy body weight goes hand in hand with a whole food plant based diet. With 67% of Australian adults overweight or obese, this is a lifestyle change that could benefit so many people, if they only knew how simple and delicious it can be.
Sometimes, people are concerned that a plant based diet won’t meet all their nutritional needs. However a well-planned whole food plant based diet is nutritionally adequate for all stages of life, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.
It’s important to remember, however, that whole food plant based diets and vegan diets aren’t necessarily the same thing, with many ‘vegan’ foods on the market being highly processed and full of sugar and unhealthy fats. Donuts and Oreos are vegan for example…but are certainly not very nourishing!
Transitioning to a whole food plant based diet has so many benefits, and we’ve seen time and time again that when people shift to a more plant based way of eating, they lose weight, have more energy and see huge improvements in their overall health and wellbeing. Now who doesn’t want that?
